Introduction
Course Scope:
The Tank Ship Familiarization (Liquefied Gases) course is for officers and ratings who have not sailed on board liquefied gas tankers. It covers mandatory minimum training requirements prescribed by Regulation A-V/1-2, table A-V/1-2-1 of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, STCW 2010. Successful completion of this course should enable candidates to serve on liquefied gas tankers in a capacity other than master, chief engineer officer, chief mate or second engineer officer, and to perform specific duties and responsibilities related to those duties in connection with cargo and cargo equipment, provided that they are not immediately responsible for the loading, discharging, care in transit or handling of cargo.
Course Aims:
The course aims to make the participants competent in undertaking shipboard functions. The course content provides the underpinning knowledge and understanding to make the student proficient and become competent in their individual roles on board by,
- Contributing to the safe cargo operation of liquefied gas tankers
- Adhering to the tanker safety culture and safety management procedures
- Taking necessary precautions to prevent hazards
- Applying occupational health and safety precautions and measures
- Carrying out fire-fighting operations
- Respond to emergencies
- Taking precautions to prevent pollution of the environment from the release of oil or chemicals
- Following IGC Code and regulations for Liquefied Gas transportation as specified under IMO and USCG

- Know the basics of cargo operations
- Understand the physical properties of liquefied gases
- Know the hazards associated with tanker operations
- Know the measures for controlling hazardous situations
- Understand the information on a Safety Data Sheet (SDS)
- Understand the function and use of gas-measuring and other instruments
- Know the use of safety equipment and protective devices
- Know the safe working practices and procedures relevant to liquefied gas tankers
- Know the fire safety and fire fighting organizations and operations on board
- Understand the emergency procedures including emergency shutdown
- Understand the procedures to prevent pollution as relevant on a gas tanker
- Interpret real-life case studies to apply concepts learned on LGTF course
