Course Introduction
Aim and Scope
This course is intended to provide training to Instructors to meet the Mandatory minimum requirements, as specified in Section A-1/6, A-1/8 and guidance contained in sections B-1/6, B-1/8 of the STCW convention. This course is also designed to meet the requirements of IMO Model Courses 6.09 on ‘Training Course for instructors’.
The course is of limited duration and therefore cannot be considered as providing comprehensive teacher training, which would take much longer. However, the course does include many principles of teaching together with their applications in training, using various styles of learning.
- Furthermore, those whose teaching experience has been mainly associated with lecturing will gain considerable benefit insofar as, they will explore and experience a variety of teaching techniques.
- The course also reviews the IMO Model Courses, their objectives and the requirements of the participants in them.
- In the subsequent parts, the course deals with basic aspects of the learning process, the purpose of training, the setting of training objectives and basic principles of course design.
- The main part of the course deals with the techniques of training and the particular responsibilities of trainers.
- The scope involves conventional teaching and training methods, participative training techniques (such as task solving, both individually and in groups), simulation exercises involving ‘role playing’ as well as the most common forms of teaching, e.g. audio - visual presentation.
- While ‘ideal’ solutions are sought in this part of the course, the practical constraints which trainers face are also reviewed. Exercising adaptation to local circumstances is an important part of the course.
- Further, the course covers the assessment of participants for the purposes of admittance to courses, possible adjustments of teaching plans to suit entry qualifications, monitoring progress during courses and the issue of a certificate where applicable.
- Finally, the issues related to course evaluation are covered. The learning style of the course needs to be highly participative.
Description process
- Maritime lecturers chosen for the conduct of Certificate of Competency and modular courses will be fully qualified in the subject matter of the courses, which they are going to teach.
- They may however be less familiar with training techniques and the effective conduct of training courses.
- Each certificate of competency and modular course package contains some advice to the lecturer in the form of references and guidelines which will assist in the conduct of the course.
- In addition, the guidelines on the Implementation of IMO Model Courses provide valuable references of lectures and presentations and general course conduct.
- Nevertheless, it is considered necessary to offer a full course for maritime lecturers which would not only review current training techniques, but actually provide experience of course management and training techniques to lecturers.
- While it is specifically concerned with those skills which are required for efficient implementation of the IMO Model Courses, it is believed to be of general benefit for the conduct of other courses as well.
